It takes a good deal of time for dopamine to replenish itself in the brain, and as a result, taking subsequent hits of crack soon after the last high produces a decreasingly intense high.

Crack cocaine use can cause numerous side effects, including permanent change in neural tissue. Side effects include cerebral hemorrhage, kidney failure, tachycardia (rapid beating of the heart), paranoia, hyperthermia, abnormal heart beat, depression, increase in blood pressure, convulsions, and a whole host of other problems. The rush of dopamine into the brain can cause serious adverse effects, which can create other bad behaviors, depression, anxiety, and hypersomnia in crack cocaine addicts.
