Notice we do not list genetics as a cause. There are millions of people in the United States whose parents and/or grandparents were addicts or alcoholics and they are not. Either they do not use at all, or they can use socially without becoming dependent. Neither do we say that relapse is due to your having the "disease" of alcoholism or addiction. We know that neither addiction nor alcoholism are diseases, but symptoms of one or more of the four causes, and that once the causes have been discovered and healed, dependence on drugs, alcohol or addictive behavior ends. We understand and have taken into consideration that each of our clients has a unique past with individual experiences that have led them towards drug addiction. There may be traumatic memories that remain overwhelming, that contribute to chronic self-medication. These memories can then disturb us on a conscious and/or subconscious level causing us to abuse drugs to manage the pain, necessitating rehabilitation.
