THE FACTS OF ECSTASY ADDICTION

Popular in the college and underground rave scenes, ecstasy is a man-made psychedelic drug with hallucinogenic properties. Ecstasy's active ingredient, MDMA (Methylenedioxymethamphetamine), acts as a psychoactive stimulant, causing hyperawareness of the senses, heightened empathy, emotional openness and intense euphoria. Fueled by a release of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, ecstasy users experience a rush of energy and happiness, leading to all-night dancing, incessant talking and feelings of emotional connectedness.

However, due to the rapid release of serotonin, ecstasy users experience the depletion of this vital neurotransmitter in the days following an ecstasy trip, leading to depression, anxiety and lethargy. One of the most serious risks of ecstasy addiction is dehydration, leading to intense fevers, overheating and possibly death. With continual use, ecstasy users can also experience other side effects, such as tooth and gum disease, bruxism (teeth grinding), jaw clenching and high blood pressure--as well as transmission of sexually transmitted diseases from lowered inhibition during intoxication.

At Passages Malibu Addiction Cure Center, we understand that the reasons for ecstasy addiction vary by individual and can encompass psychological, physical and social contributing factors. However, our extensive work with ecstasy addiction has shown us that at heart, ecstasy addiction generally stems from one of the following causes:

1. A chemical imbalance in the brain.
2. Psychological or emotional trauma from the past.
3. Erroneous beliefs about the self or the world.
4. Insufficient coping skills for life challenges.

For some, ecstasy use escalates at underground raves in the search for true companionship and camaraderie. For others, ecstasy provides a temporary means to the confidence and extroversion they lack in daily interactions. Some individuals who develop ecstasy addictions use the euphoric experience ecstasy provides as a way to self medicate past traumas, negative self beliefs, anxiety or depression.

At Passages Malibu Addiction Cure Center, we reject the notion of addiction as a genetic, incurable "disease" that definitively predisposes a person to ecstasy dependency. We believe that this overly simplistic viewpoint disempowers the individual and often causes treatment facilities to overlook the underlying causes of ecstasy addiction. We point to many individuals with a family history of addiction who never develop addictions of their own--as well as those who struggle with ecstasy addiction and other substance abuse issues who have no family history of addiction. At Passages Malibu, we seek to uncover the root causes of each individual's addiction so that ecstasy dependency can be properly treated--and fully cured.

IS ECSTASY ADDICTIVE?

Continued ecstasy use quickly leads to tolerance to the MDMA, causing ecstasy users to increase their dosage over time. Because ecstasy causes a massive release of serotonin, repeated use generally will have diminishing effects if ecstasy trips are spaced too closely together. As a result, ecstasy is often not considered physically addictive in the traditional sense.

Chronic ecstasy use can lead to psychological addiction. Severe depression, anxiety, and lethargy have been linked to long-term ecstasy usage, as well as memory loss and cognitive disturbances. In fact, one study found that 43 percent of ecstasy users displayed features of addiction, with an additional 34 percent demonstrating reactions and behaviors consistent with drug abuse. In particular, six out of ten ecstasy users experienced notable emotional and physical reactions to ecstasy use and cessation that indicated withdrawal from the drug.

Perhaps more importantly, a single ecstasy trip can have detrimental effects on the brain and body. The combination of all-night dancing and MDMA can lead to severe dehydration, hyperthermia (excessively high fever), kidney failure, and death. In an effort to stave off dehydration, some ecstasy users develop hyponatremia--a flooding of water in the lungs due to excessive hydration. Ecstasy trips can also cause circulatory problems, brain hemorrhaging in the event of overdose, compromised immune response, stroke, seizures and neurological damage. Users can also develop Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD), causing flashbacks and hallucinations well after the period of use, in rare cases.

DISCOVERING AND HEALING THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF YOUR ECSTASY ADDICTION

Here at Passages Addiction Cure Center in Malibu, on the coast of beautiful southern California, we know that all dependency is a symptom of an underlying problem. By seeing your dependency in that new light, you will be able to heal yourself more quickly and more effectively than if you continue to believe that alcoholism and addiction are diseases and that they are incurable.

You are not incurably diseased. You are merely self-medicating your underlying problems with addictive substances or addictive behavior until you have reached the point where you cannot stop without help. We at Passages are here to help you or someone you love. We're here to guide you or your loved one along the path of rehabilitation to a life permanently free of addictive substances such as ecstasy.

In order to achieve your goal of being permanently free of addictive substances, we pair you upon arrival with 10 specialists who will work one-on-one with you every week, and with some you will meet twice each week. This amounts to at least 15 individual sessions per week, more than 60 individual sessions per month. At the end of each week, your entire treatment team meets with all the other therapists to discuss your particular program and to create a new program for the following week.

Your team includes a clinical psychologist, a hypnotherapist, a spiritual counselor, a medical doctor we recommend, an acupuncturist, a drug and alcohol counselor, a marriage family therapist, a nutritionist, a physical trainer, a life purpose coach, a continuing care specialist for when you leave Passages and a massage therapist. In addition, our two directors, Chris and Pax Prentiss are available to meet with you personally. That level of care is not available at any other substance abuse center anywhere in the world.

How Can Passages Malibu Help You

ONE-ON-ONE TREATMENT IS ESSENTIAL FOR SUCCESSFUL ECSTASY REHABILITATION

After years of successfully treating addiction, we've learned that individual treatment is the key to effective recovery. Because of this, Passages Addiction Cure Center offers the highest level of one-on-one treatment than any other drug or alcohol rehabilitation facility in the world. While some ecstasy addiction programs offer a weekly solo session each week at most, the vast majority (95 to 96 percent of drug rehabilitation programs) rely solely on group therapy for drug treatment.

While group therapy can provide a means of support, the average relapse statistics for this methodology range from 80 to 86 percent. These high relapse rates speak for themselves. Group therapy simply isn't conducive to the level of deep inner healing necessary to successfully cure addiction. Individual needs quickly become overlooked for the sake of the group, and recovering individuals are left without a tailored treatment plan or individualized attention.

Additionally, some of the underlying reasons for the development of ecstasy addiction--such as verbal, physical, or sexual trauma or negative self-beliefs--are exceptionally difficult to share in a group setting. Group therapy simply doesn't provide the emotional safety and confidentiality necessary for most people to unlock their deepest fears and most private experiences. As a result, clients tend not to open up fully on an emotional or psychological level--preventing the necessary healing and assessment from taking place.

At Passages, we believe that no two addictions are identical, just as each individual with an addiction is unique. We provide individualized attention in all arenas--from medical treatments to psychological therapies. Everyone's personal history, addiction issues, backgrounds, family issues and life course is singular--and we believe in creating a customized treatment plan targeted at your personality, body and mind. While many other addiction rehabilitation centers promote "one size fits all" solutions, we endeavor to create a customized cure that creates a personalized route to recovery.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO YOUR ECSTASY ADDICTION CURE

In addition to our individualized approach to healing addiction, Passages Malibu Addiction Cure Center takes a holistic, integrative approach to addiction recovery. Beyond the two-pronged approach of group therapy and detox employed by most rehab centers, Passages seeks to treat the entire person--body, mind and spirit. This multi-faceted approach blends the science of Western medicine with the time-tested wellness approaches of Eastern medicine, and treats clients from a host of psychological, spiritual, nutritional, and fitness disciplines. Just as addiction is a complex condition, the best route to a full recovery will target every aspect of living.

When clients with ecstasy addictions arrive at Passages, many of them have found that drug dependency has pervaded almost every aspect of their lives. Relationships break down, marriages bend under stress, career paths become derailed, physical health declines and clients often struggle with depression, anxiety and spiritual disillusionment. Our comprehensive team seeks to pinpoint the underlying cause of your addiction, and then works to restore balance and healing to eliminate the buried pain that has fueled ecstasy dependency. At Passages Malibu Addiction Cure Center, we endeavor to help the addicted individual heal each area of their lives, promoting ongoing health and mental wellness--and creating a lasting recovery that continues when you return home.
