We, here at Passages Addiction Cure Center, have found that there
are only four causes of all dependency. They are: 1. Chemical
imbalance in the brain;
2. Unresolved events from the past;
3. Beliefs you hold that are inconsistent with what is true;
4. An inability to cope with current conditions.
Note that we do not claim genetics to be a cause of dependency,
because genetics is not, contrary to popular thought, a causing
factor. In fact, there are many millions of people in the
United States who have parents and grandparents who have been
or still are alcoholics or addicts, and they remain alcohol
and drug free. These people might be able to use socially,
but do not become dependent, or sometimes they do not use
at all. Additionally, we never claim that addiction or alcoholism
are diseases, because neither are. Dependency is merely a
result of a person’s attempt to cope with problems in
life, and once those underlying problems are discovered and
healed, dependency is cured.
THE FACTS OF VALIUM ADDICTION
Valium (diazepam) is used to treat a wide range of conditions
and has been one of the most widely prescribed medications for
the past 40 years. Valium is often prescribed to treat anxiety,
insomnia, seizures, alcohol withdrawal, and muscle spasms. Sometimes
it becomes necessary to employ the knowledge and skill of rehabilitation
professionals to assist in ceasing usage of the drug, as
there are dangers associated with stopping Valium too quickly.
The most common side effect to sudden stoppage is seizure. This
can be avoided with a professionally supervised detox. Valium
is very addictive, and has a very long half-life, so the detox
must be handled with the utmost care.
Half-life refers to
the length of time it takes for a drug to be reduced to 50
percent of its original concentration. For example, if a drug
has a half-life of two days, this means that it takes two
days for the drug to wear off to half of its original potency.
Valium has one of the longest half-lives of any drug on the
market at about 6 days. In other words, it takes 6 whole days
for the drug’s potency to decline by 50 percent. It
usually takes 7 half-lives for a drug to leave our body completely.
So if it takes 6 days for Valium to be reduced to 50 percent
of its original potency, and 7 half-lives to rid it from our
system completely, then Valium remains in our bodies for about
42 days from the time we first ingest it.
Those figures only apply to a single dose of Valium. But
a doctor would certainly be prescribing more than a one-time
dosage, often suggesting that you take about 10 milligrams
of Valium twice a day. That means that on the second day of
taking the drug, the first day’s dosage is still in
your body and is still working at more than 90 percent of
its original potency. So at the end of 42 days, after taking
two doses of Valium every day, we have quite a lot of a very
addictive drug within us.
Additionally, precautions must be taken when we stop taking
a drug like Valium, which is a benzodiazepine that makes us
sleepy and relaxed. All people experience severe withdrawal
symptoms as a result of stopping Valium after prolonged use,
and it can be very dangerous, even life-threatening, to stop
Valium abruptly. Experienced medical care is advised for anyone
stopping Valium.
STACKING DRUGS
Often, when Valium is taken regularly for long periods of time,
you may begin to feel a little woozy and, as a result, you may
decide it’s not quite the right drug. It’s not difficult
to imagine why you might think that after reading the explanation
of Valium’s long half-life. Side effects are common after
prolonged use. Unfortunately, when you go back to your doctor
and tell him or her that you don’t think Valium is working
well for you, the doctor will most likely not wait 42 days
until the last Valium dosage you took is out of your system.
Almost every time, the doctor will say, “Okay, try this,”
and he’ll give you another drug to try. This is called
stacking, and we’ve seen people come into Passages Addiction
Cure Center who have been on as many as 18 different drugs.
In addition, treating our conditions with psychological drugs
is usually ineffective because these addictive drugs don’t
cure; they only modify our feelings. If you stop using the
drug, the symptoms for which you originally began taking drugs
like Valium will return with full force, proving that the
drug has done nothing to actually heal the causes of your
symptoms. The key is to not use medication to shut off your
alarm system, which is exactly what your symptoms are, but
to discover the underlying problems that have created your
symptoms and heal those using holistic therapy.
CHANGING THE TREATMENT PROGRAM PARADIGM
Instead of stacking drugs to medicate your problems, here at
Passages Addiction Cure Center, we employ holistic techniques,
meaning we treat the whole person, body, mind and spirit, to
discover the underlying psychological, physical, and spiritual
problems that are causing him or her to use. Once the underlying
problems have been discovered, we focus on healing them. We
do with this with one-to-one therapy, which is the most effective
way to treat someone with a dependency.
At Passages Addiction Cure Center, each client receives more
than 65 sessions of private therapy a month. This is far more
private one-to-one therapy than any other treatment facility
provides. In fact, each client has their own 10-person team
of therapists who works with them privately and individually.
Passages pioneered the one-to-one approach.
The treatment paradigm of our country and indeed the rest
of the world must change if dependency is to be overcome in
our world today. However, achieving this goal is difficult
when treatment programs are still treating alcoholism, addiction
and addictive behavior as if they are the problems, when,
in fact, they have nothing to do with the problems. Neither
will group meetings work if they are the primary basis of
a treatment program. They are not offering enough one-to-one
counseling.
In almost every treatment center in the world, 96 to 97 percent
of their program consists of group meetings with only one
individual session a week. Here at Passages, we know that
this method does not work because each client has a unique
social and medical history, a specific set of problems, and
a unique original cause of their dependency. Therefore, each
client needs a unique treatment
program, which will discover the root causes of the dependency
and heal it. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
For an analogy of the group treatment approach, think of
it this way: imagine that there are ten people in a doctor’s
office, one with cancer, one with a broken arm, another with
measles, and a fourth with flu, and so on, and they all receive
the same treatment. Doesn’t seem logical, does it? The
same common sense approach applies to drug
and alcohol
rehab treatment.
With more than 65 private one-to-one sessions a month, we
offer an extensive amount of treatment for each of our clients,
locating the root causes of their dependencies and unearthing
the particular reasons why they have reached for drugs or
alcohol to cope with the problems of their lives. One-to-one
sessions are key because the individual issues at the core
of dependency are just that—completely individual.
Once we help you to heal the underlying problems that led
you to your Valium dependency, you will see your cravings
start to rapidly diminish.
BELIEVING A CURE IS POSSIBLE FOR YOU
Here at Passages Addiction Cure Center, located in beautiful
southern California, we believe in and offer a cure. Hardly
anyone else does. What you believe about yourself, about alcoholism
and addiction, and about the possibility of a cure are key
factors in determining whether you’ll overcome your
dependency on addictive substances and behaviors, or remain
dependent on them. If you believe that relapse is common,
you will subconsciously give yourself permission to relapse.
At Passages Addiction Cure Center, we never teach people
that relapse is part of recovery and due in part to that belief,
we rarely have a relapse. Less than 16 percent of our clients
relapse. Compare our statistic to the national relapse rate
that is 80 percent for users of illegal drugs and 86 percent
for those using alcohol and heroin. Add to that the steadily
increasing epidemic of prescription drug users, and you will
start to get the picture.
One of the strong beliefs clients have at Passages Addiction
Cure Center is that staying sober is the only way to live
a happy life. They believe that sobriety is the norm among
our clients. And this is true. So the first step in achieving
a cure from alcohol and drug addiction is to believe that
a cure is possible for you. The second is to discover and
heal the underlying causes of your dependency with a holistic
recovery program that uses lots of one-to-one therapy.

ONE-TO-ONE TREATMENT IS THE FOUNDATION OF OUR PROGRAM
Total recovery from addictive drugs and alcohol requires
the constant, individual attention that only a program with
extensive one-to-one treatment can provide.
One-to-one treatment is essential because it creates a safe
haven for clients to feel comfortable enough to reveal secret,
private, or even shameful emotions and experiences. It also
allows for a more individualized treatment program, tailored
to your specific needs and situation. While a very small part
of our program is group treatment, the majority is one-to-one
with some of the finest substance abuse treatment professionals
in the world.
